While US beef has been allowed in since the beginning of summer it has only been in the small butcher shops. Immediately after they began selling beef again, the lines outside these small butcher shops often went out the door.
However, the major markets (E-mart, Lotte-mart etc.) opted not to carry US beef. At the time there were claims from unions and other civic groups that they would blockade not only the dockside distribution centers, but the stores that carried any dangerous disease ridden beef from America. The big stores probably remembered what happened before when SK let US beef in.
That's right, protesters threw cow crap all over the beef in the store while onlookers (press, police, other protesters, shoppers) watched. http://joongangdaily.joins.com/article/view.asp?aid=2878042 This article is from 2007.
Therefore, what I have been waiting for is for the big chains to start selling US beef again, and that happened last week. When I heard the news I had to take a pilgrimage to my local Emart to see if it was true. Here are the results:
High quality US Beef for less than half of what the equivalent of Korean beef would be. So to celebrate both my birthday and the return of beef to the menu I had a beef night.
Now, while in Korea I actually eat much less beef than in the US anyways, I have more pork and chicken. This is not only due to the price but to the menu as well. So I decided to have a beef sandwich, with a couple of slices of beef pizza, and a side of beef to be sure.
Yep, I even splurged for an A&W. Yummy.
